DESCRIPTION:This lecture will lay out the global landscape of vaccine research and development: in a historical context and through the lens of recent technological breakthroughs. Using the COVID-19 pandemic as a prime, but not singular example, this lecture will describe how the field of vaccinology has arrived at an inflection point in its trajectory toward providing faster and broader solutions to the growing threat of emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases. This lecture will describe how, throughout the history of public health, the US military has been at the forefront of developing novel vaccines of global impact and how it still leads that fight now and must do so in the future, with efforts like the US Army's COVID-19 vaccine.
